The Common Core Curriculum is a grouping of courses that all students will have to take and will be considered to be the necessary coursework for the general education of all students, regardless of any other majors or courses that are being pursued. This is an educational system that is considered as collective or communal. In this system, learners will be educated based on the same educational materials, all at a particular timeframe. The concept was begun in the early part of the 20th century in the United States and is going strong in its 10 decade of implementation.

There is some controversy over the Common Core Curriculum however, in that it is basically a top down, universal implementation of the same coursework for all students, which takes away a significant amount of local control over the schools. Another point of controversy stems from the fact that the states that have adopted the ‘new’ curriculum receive higher scoring in applications for grants from the federal government. Although there are many states who have considered the new curriculum, there are still those who actually haven’t. Such states include Alaska, Virginia, Nebraska, Minnesota and Texas.

Various critics are not really happy regarded the way math is presented. The subjects will become even more complicated for high school students. The standards are low and do not measure up to international benchmarks, Common Core proponents deny this and cite previous years of successes in math and science as their evidence of successful results.

Despite the controversies, teachers will still be able to decide how to teach the courses and that is the greatest influence upon students. The knowledge and values that will be instilled on students still depend on their instructors. Their skills and values can greatly affect their student’s learning.
